Saturday 18 April 2026, Cardiff Masonic Hall welcomed representatives from across the Constitution as the Province of South Wales hosted the United Grand Lodge of England’s Universities Scheme Conference. The event brought together around 150 delegates from Universities Scheme lodges and chapters nationwide, alongside Provincial and national representatives, for a full day of discussion, learning, and practical demonstration.
Hosting the conference represented a significant moment for South Wales. As a Province with a long-standing commitment to the Universities Scheme, the event provided an opportunity not only to support national objectives, but also to showcase the quality of work being undertaken locally.
A clear purpose and national context
In his opening address, the Universities Scheme President, RW Bro Gareth Jones, PAGM, 3GP, welcomed delegates to Cardiff and underlined the importance of the annual conference as a forum for sharing ideas, learning from experience, and contributing to the continued success of the Scheme. Particular emphasis was placed on the relationship between the Universities Scheme and UGLE’s 2022 and beyond Strategy, and the role the Scheme plays in addressing the shared challenges of attraction, retention, and long-term engagement.
The conference theme, “Maximising Potential”, reflected this focus and ran consistently throughout the day’s programme, which balanced strategic discussion with practical insight drawn from lived experience across the Provinces.
The Province of South Wales was thanked for its hospitality and organisation, with Universities Lodge, Cardiff, and the staff of Cardiff Masonic Hall acknowledged for their contributions to an excellent setting and programme.
Structure of the day
The conference programme combined plenary sessions with workshops and demonstrations, enabling delegates to engage with both the strategic direction of the Scheme and its practical delivery.
Morning sessions explored topics including:
- Harmonisation across the membership journey
- The relevance of the Universities Scheme within the wider Building Together initiative
- Retention, migration, and “stepping stone” approaches
- Attraction and engagement initiatives
- Developments within the Solomon learning framework
These sessions were led by experienced contributors drawn from UGLE committees, Provincial leadership, and those directly involved in delivering the Scheme at lodge and Chapter level.
The afternoon programme included further workshops focusing on:
- Engagement and involvement
- Freshers’ fairs and university societies
- Social media and communications
- Supporting Light Blues and Royals within a coherent membership strategy
A panel discussion and open Q&A provided delegates with the opportunity to reflect on the day’s themes and engage directly with Scheme leadership.

Demonstrations in practice
A central feature of the conference was a series of ceremonial demonstrations, designed not as performances, but as learning tools to illustrate good practice and stimulate discussion.
The previous evening, Universities Lodge, Cardiff, had delivered a Triple Initiation, demonstrating how careful preparation, teamwork, and clarity of purpose can underpin successful ceremonies involving multiple candidates.
This was followed, on the afternoon of the conference, by a selection of multi-candidate ritual by Singleton Lodge, highlighting progression within the lodge environment and the importance of continuity for newer members.
Meanwhile, Colonnade Chapter presented a Multiple Exaltation demonstration, offering insight into how Chapters can better engage members connected with the Universities Scheme and support them in extending their Masonic journey.
Each demonstration was observed with a clear educational focus, and delegates were encouraged to reflect on structure, organisation, mentoring, and candidate experience.
Leadership, reflection, and collaboration
Throughout the day, a strong emphasis was placed on collaboration and shared responsibility. Delegates were repeatedly reminded that the success of the Universities Scheme depends not solely on national leadership, but on the contribution and commitment of those delivering it on the ground.
The Universities Scheme President reflected on the energy and enthusiasm present across the conference, while the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro Robert G. Payne, expressed pride in South Wales’ role as host and gratitude to all those whose efforts made the day possible.
“It was a pleasure to see so many enthusiastic delegates gathered in Cardiff for this year’s Universities Scheme Conference.
The energy, innovation, and commitment shown by our host Province and all those who contributed to the workshops and demonstrations were truly inspiring.
The Scheme continues to go from strength to strength, and I am confident that the ideas shared here will help us engage even more students and young professionals in the years ahead.”
– RW Bro Gareth Jones, Universities Scheme President
“Hosting the Universities Scheme Conference in Cardiff was a real privilege for South Wales.
I am proud of the way our Province showcased best practice in engagement and growth, and grateful to all the delegates, organisers, and volunteers who made the day such a success.
Freemasonry thrives when we work together, share ideas, and welcome new members – and this event was a perfect example of that spirit.”
– RW Bro Robert G. Payne, Provincial Grand Master
A Provincial contribution to the future
For members of the Province of South Wales, the conference served as both recognition and validation of the work already being undertaken locally. Many of the approaches discussed and demonstrated during the day will have been familiar to South Wales members, underscoring the Province’s contribution to the development of best practice within the Universities Scheme.
As delegates departed Cardiff, there was a clear sense of momentum and shared purpose. The conference reinforced the value of the Universities Scheme as a vehicle for engagement, learning, and growth, and reaffirmed the importance of Provinces working together in support of Freemasonry’s future.
Acknowledgements
The Province of South Wales records its thanks to the Universities Scheme President and leadership team, the UGLE Communications team, all speakers and workshop leaders, and the many volunteers involved in the organisation of the conference. Particular thanks are extended to Universities Lodge, Cardiff, Singleton Lodge, and Colonnade Chapter for their thoughtful and well‑received demonstrations.
