The Universities Scheme was set up by the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) in 2005, with the aim of encouraging undergraduates and other university members to benefit from Freemasonry.
There are now over 85 Lodges in the UK that are open to university members aged 18 upwards, including undergraduates, postgraduates, senior staff members and alumni. In South Wales we have two lodges that are part of the Universities Scheme – Universities Lodge (Cardiff) and Singleton Lodge (Swansea).
To apply to be a Freemason through the Universities Scheme, simply respond ‘Yes’ to the corresponding question on the application form, and we’ll do the rest.

Green has produced a fascinating and comprehensive paper tracing its origins from the earliest University Lodges through to the establishment and growth of the Universities Scheme. It explores how Freemasonry has developed its relationship with universities and students over nearly three centuries, including the formation of the Universities Scheme in 2005 and its continuing role in introducing younger members to Freemasonry.
