On the 80th anniversary of D-Day, we pause to honour the courageous young men who stormed the beaches of Normandy, making the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Their bravery and unwavering dedication in the face of overwhelming odds will never be forgotten.
One such hero was Swansea-born Richard Pelzer, a Royal Engineer who served valiantly in the British Army. Richard’s story is a testament to the extraordinary heroism displayed by countless soldiers on that fateful day, June 6, 1944.
As the dawn broke over the English Channel, Richard and his fellow engineers were among the first to land on the beaches, tasked with dismantling obstacles and clearing paths for the advancing troops. Despite the relentless barrage of enemy fire and the perilous conditions, Richard’s determination never wavered. His efforts were crucial in securing the foothold that would eventually lead to the liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation.
Today, we honour Richard Pelzer and all the heroes of D-Day. Their legacy lives on in our hearts and in the freedom we cherish. Let us never forget their extraordinary contributions and the high price they paid for our liberty.
