First Degrees and Full Steins: An Evening of New Beginnings

Universities Lodge, Cardiff No. 5461 welcomed Masters Degree students James Bruss and Ulas Beduk into Freemasonry on Friday 23 October, when both were initiated in a First Degree ceremony. The occasion marked the beginning of their Masonic journey and a new chapter in their association with Freemasonry and the first ceremony under the Gavel of our newly Installed Worshipful Master, W. Bro Alex Kingston.

The First Degree ceremony is the first step in a Freemason’s journey, introducing new members to the organisation’s guiding principles of integrity, friendship, respect and service. For James and Ulas, their initiation represents the start of an opportunity to explore these values and become part of the life of the Lodge.

There was further cause for celebration as Brother James Thomas was also approved as a joining member of the Lodge. Alongside the initiation of James Bruss and Ulas Beduk, his admission marked another welcome addition to the Lodge’s growing membership.

Following the formal lodge meeting, the celebrations continued with an Oktoberfest-themed after-proceedings at the festive board, complete with pretzels, bratwurst and steins! The distinctive food and drinkware brought the theme to life, giving the gathering a character of its own rather than simply rounding off the formal proceedings. It offered an opportunity to continue the welcome to James and Ulas around the table, pairing the significance of their initiation with the fellowship of a shared meal. From the ceremony to the Oktoberfest celebrations, the evening brought together two complementary aspects of Lodge life: Masonic tradition and the friendships formed beyond the meeting itself.

Reflecting on the collective effort that had gone into every aspect of the event, Provincial Grand Mentor Dr Samuel Lloyd Williams praised the Lodge for the experience it had provided its members, new and established.

“In terms of membership experience, it couldn’t get better,” he remarked.

From delivering a first-class initiation ceremony to the team who organised the festive board. It was clear to all the visitors that the Brethren of Universities Lodge work as one team, with everyone contributing towards a shared goal of enjoying Freemasonry.

The Provincial Grand Mentor added “the spirit of collaboration is central to the success of the Universities Scheme, where emphasis extends beyond attracting new members to ensuring they feel welcomed, supported and encouraged throughout their Masonic journey.”

The evening demonstrated how effective teamwork, thoughtful planning and a genuine commitment to fellowship can combine to create an outstanding experience for candidates and visitors alike.

Congratulations to Brothers James and Ulas. May their membership of the Universities Lodge, Cardiff and Freemasonry in general bring lasting friendships, opportunities to learn and a fulfilling involvement in the years ahead.
