The United Grand Lodge of England’s (UGLE) Universities Scheme ensures that students, graduates, university staff and young Freemasons are welcomed into the Craft with friendship, guidance and lasting support.
Established to introduce Freemasonry to those connected with higher education in a welcoming and inclusive environment, the UGLE Universities Scheme now encompasses more than 80 participating Lodges across England and Wales.
There are two scheme Lodges in South Wales, Universities Lodge, Cardiff and Singleton Lodge in Swansea.
Through the Scheme, thousands of students and graduates have discovered the values of friendship, integrity, respect and service that underpin Freemasonry. It is recognised nationally as an important pathway for developing the next generation of Freemasons while providing opportunities for personal growth, leadership and lifelong friendships.
Gareth Jones OBE, Past Provincial Grand Master of South Wales, Past Assistant Grand Master and Third Grand Principal is the current President of the UGLE Universities Scheme, reflecting his longstanding commitment to the Craft and his passion for engaging younger generations in Freemasonry.
Within the Province, the Universities Scheme Team is an integral part of the Strategic Advisory and Action Group (StAAG), led by the Provincial Grand Mentor Dr Samuel L Williams bringing together expertise in membership, mentoring and engagement to ensure a coordinated approach across South Wales. Reflecting on the importance of the initiative, Timothy R. Clark Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Provincial Head of the Universities Scheme, said:
“University is a time when people are looking to broaden their horizons, develop their confidence and build friendships that will last a lifetime. The Universities Scheme complements that journey by introducing students and graduates to an organisation built on friendship, integrity, respect and service.
“Our ambition is not simply to welcome new members but to ensure they remain engaged, supported and inspired throughout their Masonic journey. By working closely with Lodge Mentors, Membership Officers and the Clwb Colonnade Club, we can provide the opportunities, encouragement and sense of belonging that help every new Brother flourish.”
The Scheme Lodges in South Wales continue to introduce students, university staff and alumni to Freemasonry in an open, welcoming and supportive environment. The Universities Scheme is open to anyone aged 18 or over who is studying at, employed by, or has graduated from a university, providing a natural introduction to Freemasonry and access to a network of like-minded individuals that extends well beyond graduation.

The South Wales Universities Scheme will host an Oktoberfest-themed evening this October, promising an enjoyable social occasion featuring steins, bratwurst, schnitzels, pretzels and plenty of Bavarian hospitality. A themed raffle will be held in aid of the 2032 Festival.
