On Thursday 18th June 2026, brethren assembled in goodly numbers at Pontypridd Masonic Hall to celebrate a remarkable milestone as W.Bro. Merlyn Port of Merlin Lodge No. 1578 marked 50 years of dedicated service to Freemasonry.
W.Bro. Merlyn’s Masonic journey began on 17th June 1976 when he was Initiated into Merlin Lodge in Pontypridd. Over the years, he progressed through the various offices of the Lodge and was installed into the Chair of King Solomon in 1991. Such was the esteem in which he was held by the brethren that he was honoured with a second term as Worshipful Master in 2006.
In recognition of his commitment and service to Freemasonry, Merlyn received Provincial honours in 2001 when he was appointed Past Provincial Senior Grand Deacon.
His dedication to Merlin Lodge has remained unwavering throughout his Masonic career. Since 2015, he has faithfully served as Lodge Chaplain, a role he continues to undertake with great care and distinction.
W.Bro. Merlyn is a much-loved and highly respected Freemason, not only within Merlin Lodge but throughout Pontypridd Masonic Hall. Always willing to offer guidance, support, and encouragement, he has become a trusted mentor to many younger and less experienced brethren.
The Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro. Christopher M. L. Davies, accompanied by his Provincial Escort, was delighted to present W.Bro. Merlyn with his 50-Year Certificate and commemorative lapel pin in recognition of this outstanding achievement.
The celebrations continued at the festive board, where the atmosphere was filled with friendship, laughter, and good humour qualities synonymous with Freemasonry in Pontypridd. A particularly touching moment came when W.Bro. Gareth Lewis, who had been proposed into Freemasonry by W.Bro. Merlyn more than 30 years ago, presented him with a bottle of whisky and gifts on behalf of the brethren of Merlin Lodge.
The evening was a fitting celebration to a Freemason whose five decades of service, commitment, and friendship have left a lasting impression on all who have had the privilege of knowing him. The brethren of Merlin Lodge and Pontypridd Masonic Hall extend their warmest congratulations to W.Bro. Merlyn Port and wish him many more happy and healthy years in Freemasonry.
