On Saturday, 13th September 2025, Brethren gathered at Bridgend Masonic Hall for what proved to be a highly successful and engaging Almoners’ Workshop, led by the Provincial Grand Almoner, W.Bro. Neal Whitehead.
With over 70 attendees from across the Province, the morning provided an invaluable opportunity for Lodge Almoners to gain fresh insight, practical guidance, and renewed enthusiasm for their important role.
W.Bro. Neal opened the session with a warm welcome and an outline of the morning ahead, before introducing the first guest speakers, Teresa Picton (Care Home Manager) and Shelley Owen (Business Relations Officer) of Albert Edward Prince of Wales Court. They gave an informative and uplifting presentation on the eligibility process and requirements for becoming a resident, whilst also highlighting the outstanding facilities, care, and recreational services provided by the Home. Their pride was evident as they shared the recent recognition of the Home as one of the ‘Top 20 Care Homes in Wales’ for the third consecutive year, with an exceptional rating of 9.9 out of 10.
Next to the floor was Mike Martin, the MCF’s Provincial Engagement Manager, who delivered a detailed and inspiring presentation on the essential duties of the Lodge Almoner. With warmth and clarity, Mike explained how Almoners can access and navigate the Masonic Charitable Foundation website, ensuring they have the tools and resources needed to support their Lodges effectively.
Together, W.Bro. Neal and Mike also provided an overview of the Provincial Petitions Team, describing the rigorous processes and the dedication of the trained Application Officers who work tirelessly to ensure due diligence and privacy in every case.
A lively and constructive Q&A session followed, with thought-provoking questions raised by attendees, further underlining the importance and complexity of the Almoner’s role.
The morning drew to a close with words of thanks from W.Bro. Neal Whitehead and the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro. Christopher M. L. Davies, who praised all those in attendance and reserved particular gratitude for the guest speakers, Teresa Picton, Shelley Owen, and Mike Martin (who had travelled from Kent to be present). Their contributions were met with a heartfelt round of applause, marking the conclusion of a workshop that was not only informative and practical, but also inspirational for all present.
