On Wednesday 13th May 2026, brethren gathered at Aberdare Masonic Hall to celebrate a truly remarkable milestone in the Masonic career of W.Bro. John Emlyn Thickens, 50 years of dedicated service to the Craft.
W.Bro. John was initiated into St Davids Lodge No. 679 on Wednesday 12th May 1976. Little did he know at that time that his Masonic journey would span half a century, marked by dedication, leadership, and commitment to St Davids Lodge and Freemasonry.

Having progressed through the various offices within the Lodge, W.Bro. John was installed into the Chair of King Solomon in 1992. Since then, he has continued to serve the Lodge faithfully, holding many high and important offices over the years.
John’s talents and dedication did not go unnoticed within the Province. His Provincial honours include:
- 1998 – Appointed Past Provincial Junior Grand Deacon
- 2007 – Promoted to Past Provincial Grand Registrar
- 2014 – Promoted to Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden
- 2020 – Promoted to the highest Provincial rank of Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden
In addition to his mother Lodge, W.Bro. John was also a joining member of Loyal Cambrian Lodge No. 110, Afon Dar Lodge No. 8829, and Lord Swansea Lodge No. 8364.
Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Dr. Akram Baig, was delighted to present W.Bro. John with his 50-Year Certificate and commemorative lapel badge. W.Bro. Dr. Akram Baig also delivered a wonderful presentation reflecting upon both the personal life and distinguished Masonic career of John Thickens, making the occasion especially memorable for all in attendance.
The evening was made even more special with the attendance of W.Bro. Neil Martin Evans, a past Mandating Officer of St Davids Lodge.
W.Bro. John is a highly respected and admired Freemason, known throughout the Province for nurturing and inspiring the newer and younger brethren of the Lodge. Through his example of, guidance, dedication and commitment to the values of Freemasonry, he has helped shape generations of Masons and set the standard for others to follow.
An incredible man, a dedicated Mason, and a truly fitting celebration of 50 years of outstanding service to the Craft.
